Meet a Trading Systems Developer

What do you like most about SIG technology?

There’s a pragmatism to SIG’s approach to technology. If you believe the technology being used can be improved or updated, you are welcome to present your ideas and have them discussed.

What projects and experiences have been most rewarding?

Working on trading systems across many jurisdictions throughout Asia and the Pacific - from Japan, Korea, China, and back to Australia, and across many types of financial products, has been a very rewarding experience.

I’m able to understand the architecture and design of the technical systems the traders require to achieve their goals. I also get to work directly with other technical teams and I am constantly learning new technologies and how they are used for trading.

We talk a lot about teamwork and collaboration at SIG. Where do you see this demonstrated in your current role?

The nature of our financial trading means that most of a single team’s software must integrate well with that of other teams. Because of this, there is a lot of cross-team discussion and focus on solutions that align with the larger Team SIG over any strong identification with an individual team. From my experience this type of collaboration is fairly rare in other financial institutions and for me, makes working at SIG far more rewarding and interesting.

What do you like best about working here?

After having more “corporate” style roles in the past, I particularly like the openness between teams, flat hierarchy, and the lack of focus on such things as job titles. The SIG culture has enabled me to easily learn about the firm and gain exposure to information that helps me understand how my work impacts others and the business.

If you were speaking with a graduate who was considering starting their career at SIG, what advice would you give them?

Be curious. Ask lots of questions, listen, learn, try to think of the best solutions to anything you work on and when something seems no longer fit for purpose, propose how to do it better and be prepared to do it!

In your opinion, what is the best perk we offer?

Fabulous work environment (people and work place) including the in-office gym and free, sociable lunch every day.
