Two employees at trading desk

Wei’s Story
A Path of Growth

Growing up as a math enthusiast, I always knew I wanted to work with numbers in a future career, but I wasn’t sure what would be right for me. My search for that “special something” defines my journey. I graduated with a major in pure math, then went on to graduate studies in Operations Research at Stanford. While there, I explored various adjacent subjects that intrigued me, and what stood out most was finance.

Quantitative finance turned out to be the “special something” I was looking for since it combines deep mathematical thinking with the need for decision making in a fast-paced environment. It also offers the bonus of working with some of the best minds in finance.

“I was attracted to Susquehanna because of the deep integration between the work of quants, traders, and technologists. I began my career here in high-frequency equity trading, where I learned to develop signals and strategies with the guidance of great mentors. I enjoyed the fact that my work was directly impacting the business. Susquehanna’s collaborative and flexible culture provided me with the opportunity to learn extensively, explore new scopes and responsibilities, and ultimately define my own career path.” I enjoyed the fact that my work was directly impacting the business. Susquehanna’s collaborative and flexible culture provided me with the opportunity to learn extensively, explore new scopes and responsibilities, and ultimately define my own career path.

Later, I moved to a different equity portfolio, initially with a limited scope as a junior member. However, I quickly saw opportunities to contribute to the business through a variety of means: acquiring better datasets for research, introducing machine learning techniques in signal development, coding utility functions for trading, and building systematic risk management monitors. My efforts were encouraged and acknowledged, eventually resulting in me leading the group.

Since then, both our group and portfolio size have grown significantly. The experience is deeply satisfying, akin to running a startup where I wear multiple hats and am a creative problem solver but with the resources of a large firm. This is only possible at a place like Susquehanna, where people are encouraged to collaborate, share knowledge, and take on more responsibilities as part of their growth.

Today, I still seize every opportunity to learn about new perspectives by engaging with colleagues across different teams at Susquehanna. Every day is exciting because I know I will learn and accomplish something new. This journey has taught me that with curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to embrace new challenges, we continually grow and hopefully inspire others.
