My career began in 2001 as a Drexel co-op. I remained part-time until graduation, and then started full-time in 2003 on the Fixed Income desk as an Operations Analyst. After a few years in Fixed Income, I was given the opportunity to move to the Stock Loan desk to help manage that desk’s expansion; I’ve been there since.
I like the open environment. Operations integrates with the traders and technologists, and that’s an exciting environment to be in. If I have an idea or an issue, I can mention it to one of my colleagues and we’ll start working on it. There are no walls or barriers and as you understand the business more, you’re able to come up with different suggestions regardless of how long you’ve been with the firm. You really have the opportunity to speak with and learn from anyone.
Seeing the growth of the business. When I joined, we mostly worked with one broker for financing; we now work with multiple clearing firms. We’ve worked with technology to build systems to track financing rates that the firm is paying and are continuously able to work on systems as SIG expands. I’ve also loved having the opportunity to teach and mentor a number of Operations Analysts throughout the course of my career. It’s really rewarding to see their growth.
The relationship between operations and trading immediately comes to mind. There is an ongoing dialogue between our teams to let them know what we’re seeing. They, in turn, may ask us questions about how to structure the trade or which clearing firm they should send the trade through among other things.
I get in pretty early to make sure everything is working correctly. My role is very project based working with Operations, Trading, Technology, and Accounting. My team’s main focus is to ensure the traders have all the information they need before the market opens. We review their positions, ensure the clearing firm reported those positions correctly, and reconcile anything that needs to be. As some of the firm-wide systems I’m working on are being built out, I’ll check what we’re running in parallel to test them and make sure data matches. I work with my team throughout the day to answer questions and brainstorm ideas to improve processes, automate tasks and continuously look for ways to help eliminate operational risk.
